Please take notice that New Jersey’s Supreme, Appellate, Superior and Tax Courts may waive their filing fees for someone at or below 150% of the federal poverty level who holds no more than $2,500 in liquid assets. It is not a favour and it is not charity — it is Rule 1:13-2, and the judge decides each application on the form. The catch is that claiming it means filling out another form, and that form is the one standing between a person and the courthouse door. The movant therefore applies, on the papers, for the following relief:

1. That the court waive its fee.

   One form, CN 11208, in English or Spanish. The court decides; if it waives your fees and you are later awarded more than $2,000 in the same matter, you repay them. The application, with your financial details, is filed with the court, and with limited exceptions any paper filed with the court can be looked at by the public on request.

2. That every New Jersey court form be free to fill out.

   The fee waiver is one form of 1,912. 485 of them you fill in here on your phone; the rest come as the blank form with a typed answer sheet to copy by hand.
